Delaware police appeared to have closed in on a suspect accused of shooting a state trooper multiple times Wednesday at a Wawa convenience store leading to all schools in the Appoquinimink School District in the Middletown, Delaware area to be on lockdown.

Police have informed the school district that an armed individual was in the vicinity. A field trip was returning to the school when the lockdown began and the students were diverted to a different location.

The shooting unfolded at a store near Salem and the trooper, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, ABC 6 reports.

The shooting happened around 12 p.m. at the store on Pulaski Highway (Route 40) near Salem Church Road.

While the exact circumstances of the shooting have not been released, a witness tells Action News the trooper was on the ground when the suspect shot the trooper execution-style.

A witness told The News Journal that he was stopped at a red light near the store and heard gunfire. When Clarence Travers looked over, he saw an officer in a blue uniform fall to the ground.

Travers told the newspaper that a man then got out of his vehicle, walked around the officer’s SUV and shot the officer on the ground multiple times before running off.

Travers said he pulled away from the intersection.

“I wanted to get away from that,” he said.

Another witness told Action News “Then the guy pushed the officer, I guess he was trying to get to the car or whatever. When he pushed the officer and he ran, so he pushed him and ran,” the witness said. “I didn’t understand it, I thought he was trying to push him and get away. He pushed him then he started shooting.”

Monica Moore, another witness, told The News Journal that she saw the trooper on the ground face down and people began rushing over to give him CPR.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Delaware State Police during this time. Please keep the Officer who was injured in your prayers,” the University of Delaware police posted on Facebook.

A video of the scene taken shortly after the shooting showed ambulances and police officers gathered in front of the store, which was blocked off by crime scene tape.

UPDATE The man believed to be a suspect in the shooting of a Delaware state trooper is firing shots at police from his home in Middletown, officials said.

Police say a male suspect is refusing orders to surrender and continues to fire at officers.

It is believed that he is inside the home by himself. Hostage negotiators were trying to establish contact with the man.

Police were led to the development after receiving tips and information from witnesses at a Wawa in Bear, Delaware, where the trooper was shot.

Residents in the area are being told to stay inside their homes and lock their doors until notified otherwise.

We pray for the officer who was murdered and we ask our Lord to watch over the officers who have this scumbag surrounded.

Stay safe out there BLUE!
