Sweeping legislation that will ban semi-automatic long guns will reportedly soon get pushed through California’s state legislature.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law last July that will redefine what is and isn’t an assault rifle. It goes into effect Jan. 1 and will affect many thousands of California gun owners.

The most common example of what California defines as an assault rifle is the standard AR15. Starting in 2017, no one will be able to legally buy or sell one in that state.

The sale of modern sporting rifles with “bullet button” magazine release mechanisms will be prohibited at the start of the new year. The ban has led a surge in long gun sales. Although AR-15s with a “bullet button” will be illegal to buy after that date, long guns with the button are permitted if purchased before the new year.

A “bullet button” reduces the speed at which a law abiding citizen can remove an empty magazine to replace it with a loaded one and is required on all automatic firearms by the state of California.

Executive Director of Gun Owners of California says that “assault weapons” ban and the bullet button ban are the preliminary measures toward outlawing all semi-automatic rifles.

“These laws are the tip of the iceberg here in California,” Paredes told Breitbart in an interview published Wednesday. “We expect they are going to introduce legislation to totally ban semi-automatic long guns in California.”

“They will do this because they know we will come up with a new way to beat their latest ban—the ‘bullet button’ ban—if given time,” he added.

Paredes says California Democrats are eager to trample on the Second Amendment.

“They had a bill for this last year that we were able to kill. We think they will bring it up again and they will also introduce legislation to put in place a one-gun-per-month of any kind purchase limit,” he said. “This limit will apply whether it’s a handgun or a long gun, in order to try to slow down the sales of guns in California.”

According to Guns.com, the sale of ammo without a license will also be a misdemeanor for any business or person selling more than 500 rounds per month in the state of California in 2017. Internet sales, would also be illegal, unless the buyer uses a local ammo vendor as a middleman. Those who want to purchase ammunition would need to get a four-year $50 permit, which would require a background check.

The only kind of firearm sales that are permitted in California are those that are incorporate a background check, and the new ban on so-called ‘assault weapons’ will only increase the number of guns available to criminals.
