On Sunday, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the liberal Democrat branded a “fascist” for his comments targeting the Tea Party, announced a proposal that would see autistic children fitted with tracking devices, all paid by the federal government, the New York Daily News reported.
The measure, known as “Avonte’s Law,” would expand an existing voluntary program for those suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. The proposal is named after 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, an autistic child who was found dead last week.
The devices would not be implanted, but could be attached to wristwatches, ankle bracelets, clipped on belts or woven into shoelaces, the Daily News said.
“The program would be completely voluntary for parents and run by local law enforcement,” Schumer’s office said.
“Avonte’s running away was not an isolated incident,” Schumer said at a news conference. “This is a high-tech solution to an age-old problem.”
If passed into law, the bill would allocate $10 million for the program, giving parents free access to the devices.
Schumer, the Daily News added, first proposed the law in November when the autistic teen went missing. A post at Breitbart.com says that approximately half of autistic children wander away from supervised areas according to studies.
Reaction at the Daily News was mixed, with one person saying she was glad to “have a senator that cares about an important issue within a population whose needs are overlooked.”
Another person called it a “[t]ypical liberal answer to a single event in order to generate sympathy and gain votes from the unthinking.”
