A crew member on the scene told FOX 17 Nashville the deputy was taking the inmate to a doctor’s appointment at the Vanderbilt Medical Center location at the mall when the inmate somehow broke free and shot the deputy.

Metro Nashville PD released this info on Twitter:

“Two Robertson County deputies escorting prisoner to a clinic @ 100 Oaks when during a confrontation he grabbed a deputies gun and fired.”

“One deputy critically injured. One of the deputies returned fire. Prisoner deceased on scene.”

A second deputy who was helping with the transport was able to return fire, striking the inmate, Metro police said. The inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.

“An officer was attacked. The inmate has been shot, and is now deceased,” Robertson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Martin told The Tennessean.

The deputy was reportedly shot in the arm and abdomen, and reported as conscious and “very responsive” during transport to a nearby hospital.

According to an alert from Vanderbilt, there is no longer an ongoing threat and they are asking everyone to avoid the area at this time, Fox News reports.

The incident caused a massive response from police, which shut numerous roads in the area to make room for emergency vehicles responding to the scene.

Multiple entrances to the mall are closed, and traffic is backed up through the area.

Further details, including the identities, were not available. Authorities had only confirmed the suspect had died.

John Howser, Chief Communications Officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, released the following statement:

“This afternoon at one of our clinics on the Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks campus there was an incident involving law enforcement officers from Robertson County escorting an inmate. The incident was quickly resolved but resulted in the inmate being shot and is deceased and one officer being transported to Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital for treatment. There were no other injuries from this incident. In accordance our policies, and out of an abundance of caution, employees and visitors on the One Hundred Oaks campus were advised to shelter in place while a thorough sweep of the building was conducted by law enforcement officers. The safety and well-being of our patients and employees is always our first concern.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured officer.
