SMALL POLITICAL PARTIES LOOKING TO SHAKE THE SYSTEM UP!

Mischiefs-of-Party

People have become stuck on the need for only two major political parties. George Washington warned against political parties. While some of the smaller political parties are very focused on the issues that James Madison and George Washington spoke out against, there is still a need to shake up the political system. That is what the Georgia Libertarian Party is trying right now by getting 20% of the vote.

What George Washington said

Here, via the Washington Times, is what George Washington wanted.

Reading the words of his Farewell Address, an adept reader may be astounded at how remarkably prophetic they are:

The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

Washington argued that political parties needed to be restrained in a free country with a government empowered by the consent of the governed and established through popular elections. He warned of the possibility fearing they could distract the government from its required duty to the people and even lead to the eradication of the freedoms established by the founding.

Washington knew we would have the issues we are having. He wanting people working for the good, not political goals.

The Georgia Libertarian Party

Here, via the Georgia Libertarian Party blog, is what they are attempting to do with the governor’s race.

The prize for the Libertarian Party is 20%. By law, if a “third party” receives 20% in a gubernatorial or presidential race the party will receive full political party status. This means not only will the Libertarian Party have statewide ballot access, libertarian candidates can run in district and county races without the restrictive petition signature requirements.

We know that 40% of registered voters are not likely to vote this November. The two major parties are just not energizing voters and they’ve become disenchanted with politics as usual. We need them to vote for the Libertarian Party candidates.

Georgia has some of the most restrictive ballot access laws in the nation. These laws were enacted to keep down competition and limit the choice for voters.

While many people will not see another dominant party as a solution, it will shake up the status quo. Such a party can show other parties how to get in there and break up the money interests that have the political system locked up.
