Sassy Liberty AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –
The NBA has officially prohibited its players from kneeling during the national anthem to protest everything from police brutality, racial inequality, the wage-pay gap, and every other social justice cause one can think of, it apparently will not stop LeBron James.
James has decided that if he cannot kneel to show his support via a fashion statement in the Cleveland Cavalier’s season opener against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday evening. James wore a pair of black Nikes with the word “EQUALITY” emblazoned in gold across the back of each shoe. During the national anthem, the Celtics chose to bow the heads and the Cavaliers chose to link arms.
The “Equality” shoes were part of a Nike campaign in February to commemorate Black History Month. In the wake of NFL protests during the national anthem, the NBA issued a memo to all 30 teams reminding them that all NBA players must stand for the national anthem last month. Coaches and players were advised to make some level of statement about diversity and equality prior to the national anthem or post a video.
One cannot help but harken back to when Tennessee Titans linebacker Avery Williamson. The NFL threatened to sack him as well as fine him $6,000 in violation of the league’s uniform code for choosing to make a fashion statement on the field by wearing patriotic cleats honoring those that died on 9/11. Williamson had planned to wear the specially designed cleats at the Titans season-opening game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Rather than raise a ruckus, Williamson humbly told the Tennessean –
“I don’t want to draw negative attention, so I’m just going to focus on playing the game.”

What a marked shift from the antics of former San Fransico 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his grievance proclaiming that all 32 teams of the NFL colluded to keep him unemployed. The outrage from the public on Williamson’s behalf was such that two police unions offered to pay Williamson’s fine should he choose to wear the patriotic cleats in defiance of the NFL.
Yet, Kaepernick himself was allowed to wear socks depicting police officers as pigs with no repercussions and James is apparently allowed to wear shoes espousing a message of Equality.
James has broadcasted his disapproval for President Trump far and wide. After President Trump famously rescinded NBA star Steph Curry’s invitation to the White House, James responded with it was no longer an honor to visit the White House while Donald Trump was president. James’ tweeted –
“U bum @stephencurry30 already said he ain’t going! So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!”
