Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday there was little chance North Korea could use talks on the Winter Olympics as a wedge issue to set Washington and Seoul at odds on the denuclearization of the peninsula, according to Military News.

North Korea has agreed to open dialogue with neighboring South Korea for the first time in more than two years, according to officials in Seoul.

The meeting will be held on January 9 at the border village of Panmunjom, inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

On Friday, SOD Mattis and Minister of National Defense for South Korea, Song Young-moo, Mattis was told that the talks would strictly be over the Winter Olympics and the delegations would not cover nuclear disarmament or any treaty with the United States.

The talks would be “about the Olympics only, that’s the sum total of subjects that are going to be discussed.  This is by South Korean leadership telling us this –so, no, we are not concerned. There’s nothing where they (North Korea) can drive a wedge at all.”

President Trump and South Korean President Moon, spoke on Thursday agreed to postpone any military joint training so that South Korea can focus on security concerns for the Winter Olympics.

South Korea cannot speak on behalf of the United States and any discussion they have with North Korea must be about Winter Olympics and Paralympics only.

Commander of U.S. forces in South Korea stated that Kim Jong Un’s agreement for talks, is just a psyop to please China and an attempt to drive a wedge between the United States and South Korea.

“We can be generally pleased by the recent overtures that happened, that resulted in the talks next week, but we must keep our expectations at the appropriate level.  North Korea, as evidenced by its missile launches and nuclear programs, is still determined to become a nuclear capable nation, and We can’t ignore that reality.” ~ Commander of U.S. Forces South Korea Gen. Vincent Brooks

General Brooks went on to say that the United States and South Korea cannot ignore North Korea’s ambitions to divide them and they must continue to be military ready and focused.

SOD Mattis at a press release at the Pentagon on Friday, openly stated that he has no issues with what general brooks said and that he agrees fully with him.

The defense minister of Japan, Itsunori Onodera, stated that Japan will not fall for North Korea’s rhetoric and warns the United States and South Korea, not to fall for the lies.

“North Korea goes through phases of apparent dialogue and provocation but either way, North Korea is continuing its nuclear and missile development. We have no intention of weakening our warning and surveillance.”

Japan’s President, Shinzo Abe, is clearly frustrated with the Trump administration and the United Nations and feels the only way to protect Japan from North Korea, is to acquire missiles that have the capability to strike North Korea and North Korean ships that pose a threat to Japan.
