DEVELOPING STORYNorth Korea has launched several ballistic missiles from its east coast Thursday, South Korea’s military is reporting.

“North Korea fired multiple unidentified projectiles, assumed to be surface-to-ship missiles, this morning from the vicinity of Wonsan, Gangwon Province,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said, according to to the Yonhap news agency.

North Korea has conducted ballistic missile tests over three consecutive weekends in May going back to Mother’s Day.

The launches would be the latest in a series of tests by Pyongyang in defiance of UN sanctions.

The rogue country is on pace to break its record setting 2016 missile test-launch record, Fox News reports.

The latest missile tests come as South Korea suspended its use of the American-based missile defense system THAAD.

The office of South Korean president, Moon Jae-In, is calling for a halt in the roll-out of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system pending environmental impact reports, which could take a year to complete.

Deferring the full deployment of THAAD (currently only two out of six launchers are in the field) would appear to put the Moon administration at odds with its own defense ministry, which is reportedly keen to have THAAD as a defense against Pyongyang’s increasingly advanced missile capabilities.

Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, called South Korea’s decision “a blow to our national security interests.”

“I have not seen North Korea back down,” Smith said Wednesday. “If they get nuclear capable missiles, they will threaten and hold sway without being deterred.”

Here’s the video report from FOX:

As AFF has been reporting, tensions between North Korea and the U.S. have escalated for a lot of reasons.

North Korea threatened to “ruthlessly punish” U.S. citizens that they have unlawfully detained. Four Americans have been detained.

The dangerous threat comes on the heels of the announcement that they detained a fourth U.S. citizen for unspecified “acts of hostility aimed at overthrowing the country.”

The State Department was unable to comment specifically on the cases of the four Americans who have allegedly been arrested by the North Korean government.

“In regards to reports of recently detained U.S. citizens,” the State Department said, “we have no further comment due to privacy considerations.”

Also, Congress overwhelming voted to impose new sanctions on N.Korea for their continuous missile launches, which they aren’t happy about.

The committee of the North’s Supreme People’s Assembly denounced the sanctions as “the most heinous act against humanity that not only infringes upon the sacred sovereignty of (North Korea) but also arbitrarily violates universal principles of sovereign equality and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries which run through the United Nations Charter.”

And, North Korea accused U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and South Korean intelligence services of plotting to assassinate dictator Kim Jong Un with a “biochemical substance.”
