Over the past few years, there has been a significant upswing in protesters blocking interstates, major highways, and main thoroughfares in attempts to gain media coverage to spread their message. What is their message you ask?  Well, groups like Black Lives Matter are leading the charge and they view themselves as modern day Civil Rights activists.

Despite the prevalent message of hate and the continued blocking of traffic prevent hardworking people from freely traveling to and from their place of employment, disrupting everyday life, taxing local law enforcement to the max, and at times even preventing some from receiving necessary medical care.

Instead of uniting Americans for a common cause, these protests have instead, created much division and strife. Many Americans are simply fed up with the mob mentality and the continued accusations of racism in even the most innocent of actions or statements.

State Rep. Kathy Lohmer – Minn-R, is one that is fed up.  As a result, she is now introducing legislation that would increase the penalty for any protesters who tried to block traffic in future protests, KARE reported. This would change the offense if charged and/or convicted, from a simple misdemeanor to a gross misdemeanor.

Currently, it’s a simple misdemeanor to violate that part of Minnesota’s public right of way statute, and misdemeanors generally carry a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Lohmer’s bill, House File 55, would raise the crime of blocking a public highway to a gross misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

Lohmer states that many of her constituents have contacted her letting her know that they are in full support of stiffer penalties protesting that takes on just such a disruptive tenor.

Lohmer states –

People worry about if they’re in an ambulance trying to get to the hospital, they’re in a car trying to get to the airport or trying to visit someone who’s sick and dying, they can’t get where they need to go.
