SHAKE UP At The White House: Bannon Out, Perry In!

In what can only be described as a shake up—and possibly an unfortunate one—Steve Bannon has been removed from his somewhat unorthodox position in the National Security Council and more traditional intelligence elements have been replaced in his stead.  Among the new permanent chairs added to council meetings is Rick Perry, Secretary of Energy.

Bannon will still maintain his security clearance at its present level and he will still sit in on National Security Council meetings—he just won’t be part of the “Principals Committee.”  The Principals Committee of the NSC is the foremost committee in the organization.

The Principals Committee has a large say in what matters are attended to by President Trump.  The exclusion of one of his closest advisors is a bit unsettling in that sense.  Still, Bannon has issued a rather optimistic statement: “I was put on to ensure that [the NSC] was de-operationalized.  General McMaster has returned the NSC to its proper function.”

Bloomberg broke the news:

A White House official portrayed the change as a natural progression rather than a demotion for Bannon. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, contended that Bannon was placed on the committee in part to monitor Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and never attended a meeting. He’s no longer needed with McMaster in charge of the council, the official said.

This line about General Flynn is also rather concerning.  What the hell is going on over at Pennsylvania Ave?  Let’s hope that Mr. Trump can handle the nest of vipers he has fallen into—it’s very hard to tell who he can trust right now.  One thing is certain, Senator McCain is quite pleased with the current state of affairs.  He’s managed to get Navy pilots to go on strike and now he’s singing praises to the president’s removal of Bannon.  But if McCain is happy, that’s a red flag.
