Instead he stressed the importance of accountability and unity when he, admitted that he did not have enough information to form an opinion the case and urged fans to maintain a clear view of all of the facts and to not give in to bias.

“I’m a firm believer of justice, I’m a firm believer of doing the right thing. And I can’t repeat it enough of just holding people accountable.” Newton said in the team’s weekly press conference Wednesday afternoon.

“My heart mourns for the family. But I just don’t know enough info now.”

It is the responsibility of everyone in the Charlotte community, irrespective of race, to hold each other accountable.

“My big thing is always holding people accountable,” he said, “no matter what the race is, no matter what the gender is, no matter what the age is. We all have to hold each other accountable.”

The 27-year-old NFL star said he understands as a black man, the frustration many in the black community are currently feeling but emphasized that frustration doesn’t justify anarchy.

“I know from being a black person, it’s a lot of black people that don’t do right by black people,” Newton explained. “So you can’t be a hypocrite and just say ‘oh, well, a white man or a white police officer killed a black man.’”

“Now, that’s still messed up,” he clarified. “I’m not saying it’s okay. I’m just saying we just still got to be, you know, have a clear-eyed vision on both sides.”

“As black people, have to do right by ourselves. We can’t be hypocrites,” he added. “It starts with everybody holding each other accountable and policing yourselves.”

Newtown made headlines in August when he rejected the liberal narrative and told GQ magazine that America is “beyond”  race.
