A vicious terror attack has claimed the lives of at least 235 innocent people, and that number is expected to rise.

The assault took place at a mosque in Egypt, where gunmen opened fire and bombed the building full of men, women, and children, leaving in their wake a pile of bodies. NBC News reported that the attack took place in Egypt’s volatile Sanai Peninsula, and n addition to the hundreds of casualties, at least another 109 were injured in the barbaric assault.

From NBC:

At least 235 people were killed when gunmen opened fire and bombed a mosque in Egypt’s volatile Sinai Peninsula on Friday. Government officials said 109 more had been injured in the attack — among the deadliest in Egypt’s history.

Images from inside the building showed dozens of bodies wrapped in blood-soaked cloth lined up on the carpeted floor.

Police sources told the Associated Press that men in four off-road vehicles opened fire on worshippers in the al-Rawdah mosque in the town of Bir al-Abd, which is about 25 miles from the North Sinai provincial capital of el-Arish. NBC News could not immediately independently verify that account.

Two eyewitnesses and a security source told Reuters that the suspected militants targeted supporters of the security forces attending prayers. Citing official sources, state-run MENA reported that the mosque is largely attended by Sufi Muslims — a form of Islam considered heretical by some conservatives and extremists like the Islamic State group.

“The #Sinai mosque attacked by terrorists in Egypt was a Sufi mosque, and Sufi Muslims are perpetually targeted by extremists

235 killed, 109 injured in attack. Prayers for Egypt.”

Sadly, this was yet another attack in the name of Islam that left innocent men, women, and children dead. Fox News reported that the attackers used off-road vehicles to transport them to the mosque, where they indiscriminately murdered everyone they saw, even those trying to flee in fear for their lives.

The security officers said the men opened fire on worshipers during prayers while driving in off-road vehicles. A Ministry of Health spokesman said the terrorists set off a bomb during the attack.

“They (the extremists) were shooting at people as they left the mosque,” a resident told Reuters.

“They were shooting at the ambulances too,” the resident continued.

The attack was the largest single targeting of Egyptian civilians and the first on a large mosque congregation since the ISIS affiliate began its campaign of violence against the state following the military’s 2013 overthrow of an elected but divisive Islamist president.

While it’s believed that ISIS was responsible for the attack, the savage terror organization hasn’t claimed responsibility yet. However, ISIS has been a growing problem in Egypt as the U.S.-led coalition continues to decimate them in Iraq and Syria, forcing them to flee to other nations to find refuge.

Just last month, 52 Egyptian police officers were murdered during a raid on a suspected militant hideout deep in the desert in the western part of the country. Additionally, Last Palm Sunday, 47 Coptic Christians were murdered by the terrorist group, and countless others have lost their lives in Egypt due to the increasing violence from ISIS, which has been enduring heavy losses ever since President Trump took office.

In response to today’s attack, President Trump tweeted the following:

“Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt. The world cannot tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!”

“Will be calling the President of Egypt in a short while to discuss the tragic terrorist attack, with so much loss of life. We have to get TOUGHER AND SMARTER than ever before, and we will. Need the WALL, need the BAN! God bless the people of Egypt.”
