BREAKING: NYC terror bomber is 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, a foreign-born immigrant

A Bangladeshi man reportedly inspired by ISIS set off a pipe bomb inside New York’s Port Authority bus terminal during rush hour Monday morning, causing mass chaos but causing few injuries likely because the “attempted terrorist” detonated his “low-tech device” prematurely.

Akayed Ullah, 27, set off the “effectively low-tech device” in a subway passageway just before 7:30 a.m., New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news conference. Ullah, who lived in Brooklyn, suffered burns and wounds to his abdomen and hands and appeared to be the only person seriously injured in the pipe bomb explosion, authorities said.

At least three other people suffered minor injuries, including ringing in the ears and headaches. They are in stable condition and expected to be released later Monday, the hospital said in a statement to Fox News.

Police are saying that other devices were found as well and have been “contained” at this time.

One person was in custody after an explosion near New York City’s Port Authority bus terminal during Monday morning’s rush hour, a blast that prompted mass chaos and halted multiple subway lines, the NYPD said.

Several people were reportedly injured. An NYPD source on the scene told Fox News a device went off and there was a person strapped with a bomb.

President Trump had been briefed on the incident, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted.

NYPD and FDNY officials confirmed to Fox News they were investigating reports of an explosion “of an unknown origin” near 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. Police tweeted the A, C, E subways lines were being evacuated. The terminal is “temporarily closed by authorities” at this time.

Several people wrote on social media there was mass chaos at the bus terminal, some saying there was a “stampede” when an explosion was heard.

The NYC Office of Emergency Management also tweeted there was “police activity” near West 42nd Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues and advised commuters to expect delays.

Port Authority is the largest bus terminal in the U.S. and about 232,000 commuters go through the area daily. The number of passengers is expected to jump to 337,000 daily by 2040.

The NYPD tweeted about the reported explosion.

REMARKS AS DELIVERED BY POLICE COMMISSIONER JAMES P. O’NEILL

At approximately 0720 hours, in a below ground walkway (IND line & 42nd Street & 8th Ave) connects the Port Authority bus terminal to the NYC IRT 42nd & 7th Avenue Shuttle at Times Square, police were called to a reported explosion, responding units found an injured 27-year-old male with burns and wounds to his body. Investigation at the scene indicates that this male was wearing an improvised explosive device attached to his body. This device was intentionally detonated by the subject. Two other people in the immediate area also sustained minor injuries. The subject was placed in custody and transported to Bellevue Hospital. Immediate police response to the scene included members of the Transit Bureau, Emergency Service Division, Bomb Squad, Counterterrorism Personnel, MTA Police, State Troopers and FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. In addition, the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group and Critical Response Command were assigned to other key transportation hubs and other locations throughout the city as a precautionary measure. This incident was captured on transit system video. A further review and interview of witnesses is underway. A thorough background investigation into Akayed Ullah is being conducted by the JTTF. We are asking anyone who may have any information about this individual or incident, call Terror Hotline at 888-NYC-SAFE.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal was temporarily closed and subways are bypassing Port Authority and Time Square.

People are saying it was a pipe bomb that exploded underneath the Port Authority bus terminal in New York City during this morning’s rush hour, while others are reporting the person had the bomb strapped to himself.

If it was strapped to him, it would have to have been a complete misfire because he lived through the blast.   Logic then tells us that it was more than likely a homemade explosive that was meant to be catastrophic and something went wrong.

The sources said the pipe bomb was possibly detonated in a passageway below ground at Port Authority, a major transportation hub where buses and trains operate from the west side of Midtown Manhattan.

One suspect is injured and in custody, sources said.

Authorities are not releasing any information about the man in custody at this time.  We will keep you updated as more information is released.
