The driver has been identified as a 31-year-old Tunisian national named Mohamed Bouhlel. He was killed by police in a shootout and police reported he was known to them prior to the attack.  Unlike the American government, French authorities did not hesitate in their assessment of the attack and labeled it “an act of terrorism”.  At this time no groups have claimed responsibility but according to counter-terrorism groups that collect and monitor social media for known jihadists describe accounts known to be linked to ISIS as “celebratory” and followers had been instructed to use the hashtag #Nice.

“This evening we would like to ask that the HC family keep the Copelands in your prayers. This afternoon our very own Brodie Copeland, as well as his father Sean Copeland, were killed during the terrorist attack in Nice, France. This photo was sent to me earlier today from the French Riviera…Nobody deserves this type of fate, especially not such a wonderful family. You are in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Rest in peace, Brodie and Sean, you will be remembered by many.”

Regional President Christian Estrosihas confirmed that at least 10 children have been counted among the dead. A children’s hospital in Nice has stated that they have treated approximately 50 children injured in the attack.

Many of the dead are being reported as Muslim, including women whose bodies were seen still wearing the head scarves denoting their Muslim faith. France is on its highest state of alert since ISIS attacked Paris on November 13, 2015, killing 130 people.  Flags have been lowered to half-staff in Nice and Paris and Marseille has canceled their fireworks celebrations for later today.
