WASHINGTON D.C. — According to U.S. Capitol Police a man with a rifle was arrested in a park near Senate office buildings across from Union Station in Washington on Tuesday.
Authorities say there doesn’t appear to be an ongoing threat.
The individual’s identity has not been disclosed.
Capitol Police said on X that the suspect was in custody and that they had searched the park and would go through the man’s belongings “out of an abundance of caution,” NBC News reports.
Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger identified the suspect as Ahmir Lavon Merrell, 21, of Atlanta. Manger said at a news conference that the gun appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon that looked similar to an AR-15, though he could not confirm details about the weapon.
The area was swarmed with a significant law enforcement presence. According to law enforcement, the following road closures are currently in place: Columbus Circle between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues, Northeast, and D Street between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues, Northeast.
Merrell has a warrant for a probation violation out of Georgia, Capitol Police said in a news release. It was not immediately clear why Merrell was in Washington.
He faces five charges so far, including felon in possession of a firearm and fugitive from justice.
Officers ordered the man to stop, but he did not comply, so an officer used a stun gun on his back and took him into custody, Manger said.
Officers were seen sprinting to the Capitol, followed by reporters, some of whom were not allowed to leave. A witness described the suspect as a tall Black man wearing an orange jumpsuit.
FOX News reports that Police said the man is a registered sex offender in Georgia who might be dealing with mental health issues. The man didn’t state why he was in the park with a gun.
The department had also sent out an alert that Capitol Police were responding to a suspicious package in the Upper Senate Park. It was later determined that Merrell left the bag on a park bench, officials said.
Nothing suspicious was found during an initial search of the bag.
Capitol Police said Tuesday evening that officers were alerted to Merrell’s activity after a tip.
“‘See something, say something’ is not just an empty slogan. We are grateful for the individual who alerted our officer to the man with a gun in the park,” said USCP Chief Tom Manger. “These cops immediately ran toward the man with the loaded gun. As always – I am proud of our cops.”
