Columbia, SC — Recently, the United States is seemingly experiencing a flashback to a dark time in the country’s history; a time where the color of your skin meant people treated you differently.

Unfortunately, it seems that Americans are once again choosing to focus on the color of a person’s skin, and the resultant divide being created is worrisome.

What happened to the advice of Martin Luther King Jr., who asked us to judge a man by the content of his character, not the color of his skin? Or Malcolm X, who said, “that all human beings should be respected as such, regardless of their color.”

“Race is the great taboo in our society. We are afraid to talk about it. White folks fear their unspoken views will be deemed racist. People of color are filled with sorrow and rage at unrighted wrongs. Drowning in silence, we are brothers and sisters drowning each other. Once we decide to transform ourselves from fearful caterpillars into courageous butterflies, we will be able to bridge the racial gulf and move forward together towards a bright and colourful future.”

While many continue to dwell on the level of melanin contained in an individual’s skin, there are those who see past it, and these individuals shine brighter alone than all of the bigots combined.

In the midst of hate-filled vitriol spewing back and forth across South Carolina’s state capital on Saturday, one of these remarkable individuals brilliantly shined through all the hostility.

South Carolina’s director of public safety, Leroy Smith, shattered the racist paradigm.

Smith is an individual who happens to have high levels of melanin in his skin. But this didn’t stop him from helping out a person who has lower levels of melanin than he does — despite the fact that this man had a shirt on declaring his hatred of black people. When Smith witnessed this elderly bigot wearing a swastika-blazoned black shirt, about to pass out from heat exhaustion, he rendered aid to him. Smith helped the man up into the shade of the building’s large columns where he could find water and first aid. The collectivist ties which give way to such obstinate world views as inferiority or superiority based on skin color seemed to be slipping away in the past. However, there are those among us who wish to recruit our minds to join their ranks of hate and ill will towards their fellow human.

On Saturday, Smith’s color blindness showed the world, that dwelling on race strips us of our humanity. Through no words at all, the world has been taught a valuable lesson and this lesson must be heeded. If we continue to divide ourselves based on superficial collectivist notions such as skin color, arbitrary lines drawn on maps, and flags, our children and their children will have their futures stolen from them — for no other reason than ignorance.
