THIS DAY IN HISTORY-ELVIS PRESLEY IS DRAFTED!

This day in history on December 20,1957 the ‘KING’ received his draft notice for the United States Army. Elvis was on a roll having several gold records including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Hound Dog” and “Don’t Be Cruel”. He also had a hit movie “Love Me Tender” and was a national icon in the rock and roll world. Tens of thousands of Presley’s fans sent letters to the Army asking that they allow him to stay home and make records and movies but Elvis would have no part of that! They did allow him to  finish working on his movie ‘King Creole’ before being sworn in as an army private in Memphis on March 24, 1958. After months of basic training Presley was deployed to Europe on the USS General Randall. For the following 18 months he served in Company D, 32nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armor Corps in Germany, where he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. You have to give Elvis Presley credit and admire him for not trying to avoid the draft or to serve in the States. Presley will be admired not only for his music and his movies but for being an excellent role model for all young Americans when it comes to serving our country. God bless America and God bless the ‘King’! -Clark Kent
