Fact Check: Politico Admits It Too

Vindicated: Comms Of Trump And Team Definitely Were Monitored

We finally have the first indication that Mr. Trump’s very audacious public proclamation on wiretapping has been vindicated in part.  The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes (R-CA) told reporters that members of the Donald Trump transition team and probably even President Trump himself were under US government surveillance following his victory in the November election.

Nunes says that while the surveillance appears to have been done legally (really?) he still was worried that this was not entirely above board since the investigation seems to have been entirely separate from any concerns related to Russia.  Okay, but one has to wonder: if the surveillance had nothing to do with evaluating Russia’s role in the election, then how could this be considered legal?

Here’s what Nunes had to say:

“I have seen intelligence reports that clearly show that the president-elect and his team were, I guess, at least monitored,” Nunes told reporters. “It looks to me like it was all legally collected, but it was essentially a lot of information on the president-elect and his transition team and what they were doing.”

Where Did This Info Come From? How Did Rep. Nunes Acquire It?

According to Nunes, the information was presented to him by “sources who thought that we should know it,” which is an interesting way to say that they were not authorized by their superiors to present it to him.  We’ve mentioned before that the FBI seemed to be undergoing an internal power struggle during the election — this was most notable when the FBI Vault twitter account began dropping document releases to the public.  Prior to the election, the FBI Vault twitter account had been silent for months.  Perhaps these sources are continuing the good fight for control of the deep state.

Laws Were Likely Broken During This Surveillance

It’s understood that by revealing General Flynn’s identity those monitoring the situation violated federal privacy statutes.  According to Nunes’ implication, this happened again:

Nunes said his new information appears to show that additional members of the Trump transition team — beyond former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn — were unmasked. This means they were identified in U.S. intelligence reports.
He said the information that he had seen and was disseminated across the intelligence community appeared to him to have “little or no apparent intelligence value.”
