Twitter is being forced to launch an internal investigation as of Thursday after a “customer support” employee chose to deactivate the popular and highly visible President Donald Trump’s account. The employee is believed to have been on his last day of work.

President Trump’s account disappeared at approximately 6:45 pm EST on Thursday evening.  When visitors attempted to locate President Trump’s Twitter profile they were greeted with the message – “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!” The account was down for about 11 minutes before it was brought back up.

After having his account was restored, President Trump tweeted early Friday morning –

“My Twitter account was taken down for 11 minutes by a rogue employee. I guess the word must finally be getting out-and having an impact.”

Twitter issued a statement about the approximately 11-minute outage, stating it was unclear how a “customer support” worker obtained the necessary clearance to deactivate such a high profile account but they are “conducting a full internal review.” When initially informed of the outage, Twitter officials blamed “human error.” However, just two hours later the company retracted that initial statement and stated the deactivation “was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee’s last day.”

President Trump has tweeter more than 36,000 times and currently has nearly 42 million followers on the social media platform.  Twitter has resisted all calls to delete or suspend President Trump’s account thus far from those opposed to the president using the social media outlet.

President Trump’s access to his personal twitter account @realDonaldtrump was restored at 7:03 p.m.

The Washington COMPost is attempting to create a controversy where none might otherwise exist claiming the deactivation of President Trump’s Twitter account is “raising serious questions about the security of tweets the president wields to set major policy agendas, connect with his voter base and lash out at his adversaries.”

The COMPost went on to state of the issue –

“The deactivation Thursday sparked deep and troubling questions about who has access to the president’s personal account, @realDonaldTrump, and the power that access holds. The deactivation also came at a time when the social network is under scrutiny for the role it played in spreading Russian propaganda during the 2016 presidential election.”

Naturally, we mustn’t miss any opportunity to mention that fictional Russian collusion angle….

According to a former Twitter employee interviewed by BuzzFeed a lot of employees with the social media platform have the ability to suspend a user’s account – which the company has done for every reason from real to arbitrary based on those every changing and ambiguous “terms and conditions.” Very few employees actually have the power to fully deactivate a profile though.  According to this unnamed former Twitter employee, there are no real special protections on verified or high profile accounts.  There had been some discussion at one point but those extra measures were never implemented.

The company has recently come under fire for suppressing certain pertinent Tweets during the election relating to #DNCLeaks, #Wikileaks, #HillarysEmails, and other hashtags relating negatively to Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.
