A deputy U.S. Marshal was shot and killed in southeastern Georgia Friday morning, the FBI announced, as investigators told local media a suspect was in custody.

The shooting unfolded at the Spring Creek Mobile Home Park in rural Long County, WJCL reported.

The Macon Telegraph reports that the marshal was believed to have been wearing a protective vest while serving an arrest warrant, but suffered a fatal wound from a rifle, according to initial reports.

The Long County coroner could not immediately be reached to determine whether the marshal’s family has been notified.

“It’s terrible,” said a member of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, who was headed to the hospital.

The cop killer is reportedly in custody.

The case has been taken over by the FBI. They will not release the name or the ethnicity of the shooter.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends and fellow officers.

God Bless.
