Mismanagement at the VA appears to have cost one man his penis.

A Vietnam War veteran told WKEF that he had to have a penectomy (yes, that is exactly what it sounds like) because of a misdiagnosis and long waiting times at his local VA hospital in Cincinnati.

The veteran, named Bill Kessler, went to the VA after finding a lump on his penis. He was told that it was nothing to worry about.

“I went to my primary care doctor and he examined me and said I think it’s just a cyst,” Kessler said. “He says, ‘Don’t worry about it, if it doesn’t go away we’ll look at it again.’”

Unfortunately, that was wrong. The lump was cancerous.

“Cincinnati doctors took one look at it and said that’s got to go now,” he said. “So they did a penectomy on me.”
