Just one week after President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, Obama’s Director of National Intelligence has submitted his resignation.

James Clapper told the House Intelligence Committee Thursday that he had submitted his resignation on Wednesday.

He told the House Intelligence Committee that “it felt pretty good”.

Committee members jokingly asked him to stay on for perhaps four more years. Clapper says his wife probably would have a problem with that.

Clapper has held the job since August 2010. He was previously a lieutenant general in the Air Force and director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Trump will appoint Clapper’s replacement, Jack Davis at Western Journalism reports.

Lt. Gen. Ronald Burgess, former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, was cited by one report as a possible pick. Burgess is assisting the Trump transition team with hiring for the intelligence agency positions Trump must fill.

“We must always tell our leaders at all echelons what they need to know not what they want to hear,” Burgess has said. “As our nation’s intelligence professionals we have a non-negotiable obligation to the American people to call it the way we see it.”

On a side note, in a profile published by Wired magazine only hours before his announcement, he said that he never questioned the morality of his profession.

In his role, he has often been in the position of defending the National Security Agency (NSA), just one of the covert agencies that his office oversees.

Its image was badly damaged after Edward Snowden revealed how they collect information on American citizens.

During a 2013 congressional hearing, Mr Clapper was asked: “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions, or hundreds of millions, of Americans?”

“No, sir,” Mr Clapper replied.

“It does not?” the incredulous senator responded.

“Not wittingly,” Clapper said. “There are cases where they could inadvertently, perhaps, collect, but not wittingly.”
