The plot continues to thicken as investigations into former Congressional IT aide Imran Awan and the nature of his relationship with Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.  The investigation continues to reveal that Wasserman Schultz acted in ways that clearly were not in keeping with her oath of office nor were they in any way in the best interest of the American people.

It seems that Wasserman Schultz planned to continue to keep Awan on the Congressional payroll even once Awan returned to Pakistan if his escape from the U.S. had taken off as planned. Literally, the only thing that is keeping Awan from continuing to fleece American tax payers with Wasserman Schultz help and assistance was the FBI’s interception and subsequent arrest at the airport.

Awan booked a round-trip ticket to Pakistan in July and planned to depart Monday, July 24 with a return ticket in six months. He was arrested at Dulles Airport during his attempt to leave.  The Associated Press reported that Awan’s lawyer, Chris Gowen, said Awan “had informed the House of his plans to visit his family.”

Public statements and congressional payroll records suggest Wasserman Schultz also knew Awan’s wife, Hina Alvi, a fellow Congressional IT staffer, had already successfully fled the U.S. for Pakistan while she was also a criminal suspect.

Six months of actions reveal a decision to continue paying a man who seemingly could not have been providing services to her, a person that a mountain of evidence suggests was a liability, not an asset. Awan had access to all of Wasserman Schultz’s computer files, work emails, and personal emails for a long time. He was also recently accused by a relative in court documents of wiretapping and extortion. The question is WHY?

Awan and Alvi have been the targets of a criminal investigation by Capitol Police since February 2017, yet Wasserman Schultz refused to fire them.  In fact, Awan was not fired until Tuesday after he had already been indicted for bank fraud and Alvi had already fled the country with the couple’s children to Qatar some weeks ago. Wasserman Schultz even went to far as to claim police refused to show her any evidence and that without evidence she felt free to assume Awan and Alvi were simply being targeted due to Islamophobia.

Wasserman Schultz’s office emphatically stated that Awan’s termination was prompted as a result of his Monday arrest, rather than the more appropriate action of firing him after the House Sergeant at Arms banning him and his wife from touching congressional computers or even as a result of his intention to spend 6 months in Pakistan.  All of that collectively suggests that should Awan been able to board his flight without being detained he would STILL be on the Wasserman Schultz’ payroll despite having fled the country.

According to an FBI affidavit, Alvi left the country under similar circumstances on March 5.  She withdrew their three children from school without informing Virginia education officials. packed up all her possessions, and hid over $12,000 in cash on her person.  The FBI also documents that Alvi had hundreds of thousands of dollars waiting for her in Pakistan. The money is believed to have been obtained via mortgage fraud and wired overseas with a fabricated explanation.  Just two days after Alvi fled the U.S. House records should Alvi was removed from Wasserman Schultz’s payroll.

Alvi had a round trip ticket with the return scheduled for her to return in a six month period.  However, the FBI stated they did not believe she had any intention of returning to the U.S. No one can seem to answer the simple question as to why Alvi was terminated for employment just two days into a trip that she claimed was temporary.  Yet Awan was not terminated and it did not appear he would be for a 6-month move to Pakistan. Due to the fact that Alvi only worked part time, it is peculiar that her absence would have even been noticed within a two day period unless someone informed Wasserman Schultz’s office.

Awan and Hina have been banned from the House network since February 2, 2017, by the House Sergeant-At-Arms.  Awan and Hina are listed as Wasserman Schultz’s only IT staffers.  Payroll records through March 31 which is the latest pay period available, show no other or additional IT staffer or vendor was added to the payroll after their ban either. Yet despite the ban, Awan was seen in the House office building on multiple occasions. He continued in an “advisory” capacity for Wasserman Schultz “providing advice on technology issues.”

As IT administrators, the suspects could read all emails sent and received by the lawmaker and see all files on the staff members’ computers, numerous House IT aides said. WikiLeaks shows that Awan also had the password to Wasserman Schultz’s iPad.

Interesting to note that in spite of Wasserman Schultz supposed concern for so-called racial profiling and Islamophobia, every single other Congressional colleague that employed Awan, Alvi, or their other relatives on the Congressional payroll fired them.  This includes Rep Andre Carson of Indiana who just happens to be Muslim himself.  Rep. Carson was highly critical of Wasserman Schultz’s attempts to prevent Capitol police from examining a laptop tied to Awan. Wasserman Schultz threatened the police chief with “consequences” if the laptop was not released into her custody.
