Mysterious Tools

Tools often have special indicators that mark out potential shortcuts and standards that can make them a lot more useful on the job. Unfortunately, these tools are often common ones that don’t necessarily come with an instruction manual.

Tape measures are great examples of this conundrum.

Here’s AWM with why:

With that black diamond, you can hang frames, decorations, and other things from the wall easier. You will no longer need to worry if you’re doing it wrong. Check out why in the video below!

All markings do the same thing in different ways. These included the 16-inch on center mark, the 24-inch on center mark and the black diamonds.

The 16-inch mark indicates the most common separation for studs. The 24-inch can be used for stud separation for small buildings like garden sheds.

The black diamonds are equidistant between the 16 and 24-inch markings. They allow you to lay five rafters beneath each 8-foot piece of plywood.

With this in mind, it’s little wonder that groups like the guilds and masons came to be based around architecture.  Even today, blue collar trade jobs are very much part of an on-going oral tradition.  Journeymen must work through their apprenticeships to truly learn crafts that are otherwise left a mystery to the laypeople that thinker in their homes trying to solve odd jobs.
