The World Trade Center transit hub in Manhattan – the subway that runs underneath the World Trade Center has been closed Sunday afternoon of Independence Day weekend.  The closure is stemming from investigations into a suspicious package.

Port Authority police evacuated the World Trade Center PATH station following reports of the suspicious package and called in K-9 officers to investigate. Port Authority K-9 officers received a positive hit on an unattended suitcase in a PATH rail car at the World Trade Center station.

Officers stated that the World Trade Center PATH station was evacuated immediately following reports of a suspicious package.

“We’re evacuating the building,” an officer said just before 3 p.m.

Asked how long the station would be closed, one officer said it “could be hours.”

There was no obvious sign that anything was amiss other than police asking everyone to leave the Oculus. The train in question arrived from Newark.

One security guard told passersby that there was a suspicious package found inside, and that dogs were inside sniffing.

Service is suspended to Jersey City until further notice.

“If there’s a bomb in there, it would be to your benefit to leave”, a station employee said  — “This is the World Trade Center. We have to be careful.”

The package was found at about 3 p.m. on Track 2 of the station. Approximately 15 minutes later, Port Authority evacuated the station and the NYPD’s bomb squad has been called to the scene, according to police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

On Twitter, officials state service is suspending at Exchange Place and PATH users are advised to transfer at Grove Street for the 33rd Street line to get into New York City.

Sources told CBS2 that a police dog unit received a “positive hit” in a PATH train carriage at the station in Lower Manhattan.
