Earlier today AFF Media reported that the Persian successors announced their implementation of a new high-speed torpedo package.  Their Arab counterparts in Saudi Arabia recently made an off-handed remark about how the war for the Muslim identity in the Middle East ought to be fought in Iran and far from Saudi Arabia.

The Iranians didn’t appreciate this statement.  Their Defense Minister had some very pointed words as reported by Reuters:

Iran will hit back at most of Saudi Arabia with the exception of Islam’s holiest places if the kingdom does anything “ignorant”, Tehran’s defense minister was quoted as saying on Sunday after a Saudi prince threatened to move the “battle” to Iran.

“If the Saudis do anything ignorant, we will leave no area untouched except Mecca and Medina,” Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan was quoted by the semi-official Tasnim news agency as saying.

The two nations represent the two wings of Islam on the stage of international politics.  Saudi Arabia acts on behalf of the Sunni Muslim world and Iran on behalf of the Shia Muslims.  The two have been in a very brutal satellite war in Yemen but have also run into conflict in regions of Iraq, Syria, and Bahrain as well.

In all likelihood these two will avoid a direct confrontation for the time being.  Saudi Arabia lacks a nuclear program (ostensibly) but they would retain air superiority if they came head to head with Iranians.  Little more than saber-rattling should come of this but it could boil over if retaliation in Yemen comes too heavy handed.
