Yahoo has just released a statement that certain information involving AT LEAST 500 million user accounts has been compromised.  It was stolen in late 2014 and the theft is believed to have been committed by a “state-sponsored actor.” This statement followed reports that Yahoo could soon be revealing a major data breach involving another 200 million accounts. They note that this breach is widespread and it is serious in nature.

Yahoo said in a statement: “The account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. The ongoing investigation suggests that stolen information did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information; payment card data and bank account information are not stored in the system that the investigation has found to be affected.”

Yahoo is urging its users to change all security questions and passwords if you have not done so since 2014. It remains unclear if this breach will have any sort of major regulatory and legal implications, especially in light of the $4.8 billion sale of the core of Yahoo’s business to Verizon Communications. or VZ. That deal is now moving to completion, but the companies cannot be integrated until it is approved by a number of regulatory agencies, as well as Yahoo shareholders. Representatives of VZ and Yahoo started meeting recently to review the Yahoo business so that the acquisition would go smoothly once given the green light to proceed.

The confirmation of such an extensive hack leaves significant tarnish on the record of CEO Marissa Mayer.  She was formerly a vaunted former Google exec and  has presided over numerous declines within the business since her arrival just four years ago. Her inability to turn Yahoo around or innovate any new products has led to the sale of the company to VZ.

The hacker named Peace is rumored  to have been selling the credentials for some 200 million Yahoo accounts for just over $1,800 and if that is true? Then beyond changing passwords, it is unclear just what steps Yahoo will need to take at this point to protect its users or if they even CAN protect their users from a state-sponsored threat. More details will be released as they become available.
