YAHOO! INC created a software program to run on their email servers that allowed search all of its customers’ emails for specific information provided by U.S. intelligence officials.

U.S. government classified directive was sent to YAHOO INC, which stated that scanning hundreds of millions of Yahoo Mail accounts was at the best interest of the National Security Agency and FBI, said two former employees and a third person apprised of the events.

This really should not come as any surprise, since it is part of the Fusion Center Data Agencies as well as the NSA.

Some surveillance experts said this represents the first case to surface of a U.S. Internet company agreeing to a spy agency’s demand by searching all arriving messages, as opposed to examining stored messages or scanning a small number of accounts in real time.

It is unknown at this time what data and how much data YAHOO turned over to the government.  What can be clear is that if YAHOO was ordered to do so, you can bet other companies like GMAIL were included.

From Reuters:  “According to the two former employees, Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer’s decision to obey the directive roiled some senior executives and led to the June 2015 departure of Chief Information Security Officer Alex Stamos, who now holds the top security job at Facebook Inc.”Yahoo is a law abiding company, and complies with the laws of the United States,” the company said in a brief statement in response to Reuters questions about the demand. Yahoo declined any further comment.”

The NSA referred questions to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which declined to comment.

Cell phone companies as well as internet companies have all been included in handing over data they have collected on behalf of the U.S. government, in the past.

Alphabet Inc’s Google and Microsoft Corp, two major U.S. email service providers, did not respond to requests for comment.

Disclosures by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and others have exposed the extent of electronic surveillance, leading the agencies to publicly state they were reeling it in.  However, the truth is far from what they have lead us to believe.

The issue is that this is against our rights, this is illegal and yet people will say it is for safety and war on terror.  If you believe that, contact me, I have some great ocean front property to sell you in Nebraska.

FISA experts defended Yahoo’s decision to comply, saying nothing prohibited the surveillance court from ordering a search for a specific term instead of a specific account. So-called “upstream” bulk collection from phone carriers based on content was found to be legal, they said, and the same logic could apply to Web companies’ mail.

We know our rights are being trampled and the government is illegally collecting data on us and yet people will do nothing about it.
