Joseph Jennings was an 18 year old who had epilepsy, with grand mal seizures. He was suicidal because of the fact the seizures were getting worse. He had just gotten out of the hospital for an attempted overdose. He posted a message on his Facebook page that he was going to try again. The next thing that people knew of him was when a call to the police said that a man was in the parking lot of the Orscheln Farm and Home waving a weapon. The problem with that is that he only had a cell phone. Joseph was shot at 24 times in what the police chief said was a good shooting.

Most news sources have not given the information correctly. This story is mostly from Brandy Smith, Joseph’s aunt, who was there for the nine minutes the police engaged him.

The police response

The incident between Joseph and the two officers took place in daylight. There should have been no problem seeing that he had no weapon. Also, Joseph’s Aunt Brandy was there telling the officers he had no weapons. The worst he could have had was a BB gun, which he did not. Joseph’s Aunt and Uncle tried to intervene, but the cops put guns in their face to stop them. The cops were warned about tasering him because of health issues.

The cops shot him multiple times with bean bags. Joseph lost his balance and put his arm up. The cops then shot him 24 times.  The entire time that the police engaged him was 9 minutes. The entire time they yelled at Joseph. The 24 rounds that were fired were not accurate in any way. Nine of them hit a house across the street. No one was home thankfully, as they had children. Via an article in The Dissenter, here is what the Aunt said about this.

Smith further recounted, “They said beanbag him. They bean bagged him. He lost his balance a little. He kind of took some deep breaths, a little bit. Never did he reach for a weapon. They beanbagged him two more times. He lost his balance. They beanbagged him again. He was getting ready to go down. His arm came up a little, and they opened fire on him—24 rounds.”

Joseph’s Aunt Brandy was distraught. The police answer to this was to handcuff her and put her in the back of a cop car for two and a half hours.

Via KCTV 5, here is the comments from the Ottawa Police Chief.

“They reacted based upon the training that they’ve been given from the academy,” Butler said. “We were thankful that no officer was injured from protecting themselves from risk of great bodily harm.”

No bodily harm from an unarmed person who had epilepsy after being off balance from being hit with bean bags is stretching it some.

Joseph’s story

Joseph had been growing despondent over the growing seriousness of the seizures. The night before he was killed, he had been taken to the hospital for taking 60 pills. That was around 11 pm. By 4 pm the day of his death, he had been discharged and was deemed fit and not a danger. By 7 pm he was involved with police officers. There were at least 14 police cruisers on scene. Two of the officers that shot at him were the two that responded to his attempted suicide the night before. On source that wants to remain anonymous said that he died on scene, yet the police say he died at the hospital.

Protest rally in Ottawa

On Sunday, August 31, there is to be a protest rally at the Orscheln Farm and Home, 2008 S Princeton St, Ottawa, KS, 66067. This will be at noon.

Some things to know.

• The police are already calling it a riot and are planning to treat it as such.
• The police are following the Smiths, Joseph’s Aunt and Uncle.
• No one in the area trusts the cops.

The family would prefer the protest to be non-violent.
