IRAQ — ISIS terrorists have been on high alert after three of its headquarters were attacked in central Baaj, western Nineveh, while the group’s emir was reportedly killed local sources from Nineveh province said.

ISIS has been getting hammered in Mosul and are nearly 100% defeated.

“Islamic State fighters in Baaj have been on high alert. Movements in the eastern and northern sides of the city were banned after three of its headquarters were attacked,” the source who preferred anonymity, told AlSumaria News on Thursday.

“Chaotic situation has been witnessed in Baaj since the morning. Dozens of ISIS militants took to main streets,” Iraqi News reports.

“Semi-confirmed news mentioned killing of ‘emir of Baaj’ in Mosul as an airstrike targeted the group militants on an agricultural road, 10 KM away from Baaj,” the source added.

“Several companions of the emir were killed and injured due to the fierce airstrike, which also left five vehicles burnt,” according to the source.

Close to the Iraqi-Iranian borders, Baaj is considered an important ISIS stronghold.

While major offensives take place in Mosul by Iraqi troops, backed by U.S.-led coalition, other offensives are launched by the paramilitary troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi to liberate neighboring regions in Nineveh province.

On Wednesday evening, the paramilitary troops (Popular Mobilization Units) launched a second phase of operations launched earlier this month to complete the liberation of villages in the vicinity of Qairawan, freed on Tuesday, ahead of advancing toward Baaj, west of Mosul city.

An offensive was launched by PMUs on May 12, which resulted in clearing of Qairawan region, a main Islamic State bastion in west of Mosul which links between Tal Afar town and the Syrian borders, from IS militants on Tuesday.

Earlier America’s Freedom Fighters reported that Iraqi forces killed at least 173 ISIS jihadists last week, during the offensive aimed at liberation of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Iraqi forces killed at least 173 jihadists from the Islamic State (Daesh) terrorist group on Monday local media reported, citing the head of federal police.

Iraq’s anti-terrorism units on Monday have stormed Al-Oraibi and Al-Rifa’i neighborhoods where heavy clashes are still taking place. The country’s “Quick Reaction Force” as well as the Iraqi Army’s 9th Division also entered Al-Iqtisadiyeen neighborhood and the southern and northern parts of the area, considered to be the most dangerous ISIS stronghold.

“We have destroyed 40 booby-trapped cars and killed 173 from ISIS, among them one leader,” the head of federal police said.

Sources also said that 60 ISIS militants have left with their families from neighborhood amid the ensuing commotion and clashes.

Hours after storming the neighborhoods, the Iraqi forces evacuated more than 4,000 civilians despite heavy clashes between them and ISIS.

Only a couple of ISIS-controlled neighborhoods are left after 210 days since the start of operation to liberate the northern Iraq city of Mosul.

Last week, AFF reported that ISIS militants killed at least 64 civilians, including women and children, while trying to flee battles with Iraqi security forces in western Mosul to the eastern side.

The Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights said the civilians were trying to cross the Tigris River, which divides the city, to the eastern side which Iraqi forces took over in January, but were shot dead by ISIS snipers.

The ISIS terrorists also took civilian prisoners according some of the survivors off the attack.

They said more than 40 families were trying to cross the river, but at least 64 dead bodies washed ashore.

The observatory quoted a security source in Sallamiya that the corpses bore signs of gunshots, and that he was predicting more dead bodies to resurface, Iraqi News reports.

Earlier on Sunday, BasNews quoted Ahmed al-Obaidi, a Federal Police Captain, saying that ISIS militants had shot dead 16 Iraqi women who were trying to flee al-Rifaie district in western Mosul, adding that 30 other families in the same district.

The Iraqi government and United Nations counts put the number of Iraqis displaced since the launch of the offensive to retake Mosul from IS in October 2016 at at least 600,000. Nineveh municipal officials say there are 600,000 others who fled to relatives or rented residences and therefore had not been registered.

Daesh (ISIS) has faced accusations by the U.N., Iraqi government and aid agencies of using civilians as human shields. Concerns for civilian lives had been a major reason behind occasional slowdowns of security operations and unfortunately some have been killed in operations by Iraqi forces and the allied U.S.-led coalition.
